Undergraduate/Graduate Volunteers:
Students may apply during the designated application period prior to the start of each program. Carefully read the information below before applying. Volunteers do not need to attend UNC Chapel Hill. Undergraduate/Graduate Volunteers can now volunteer in our Summer Program and/or our Academic Year Program.
Summer Program:
- Open to all eligible degree seeking students who can commit to the ENTIRE summer program (May-August) regardless of intent to volunteer in the academic year.
- Must have two semesters of college/university prior to volunteering.
- Must complete 2 shifts per week for 3 hours each (minimum of 22 shifts).
- Minimum of 65 total hours.
Academic Year Program:
- All academic year volunteers will be required to complete both the fall and spring semesters (Aug-April).
- If you are a current volunteer who needs to volunteer one more semester, please reach out to your Coordinator.
- Must have completed two semesters of college/university prior to starting.
- Minimum of 25 hours each semester AND a minimum of 13 shifts per semester.
Must be able to start the same semester you apply for and volunteer the entire timeframe. If you are unable to do so, please wait and apply another semester. After 90 days your application will be made in active, and you will need to redo parts of the onboarding process.

- Review our Volunteer Area List (for Hillsborough) and submit an Undergraduate Application (check box on this page).
- Check your email for an auto-response with information about online orientation, compliance modules, background screening, and immunization/testing requirements.
-
Check your inbox and spam/trash/junk folders for this email and if you do not receive it within 1 hour, contact jodie.skoff@unchealth.unc.edu.
-
The Immunization and TB Testing Requirements webpage lists all of the vaccines/testing required to volunteer. Review your immunization records and make arrangements to receive any additional vaccines or TB testing you may need. Tdap after the age of 18 is a new requirement.
-
Please start this process ASAP, as our requirements are not the same as school requirements, and may take several weeks to complete.
- All steps outlined in the auto-response must be completed to schedule a placement interview with your volunteer coordinator. Spots fill on a first-come, first-served basis.
- Please complete the following steps in order and send ONE email containing proof of background check submission, completed compliance modules, online orientation, and physician verification form. If you do not use the verification form, be sure that all immunizations are circled or highlighted on the documents you send. Otherwise, they will not be accepted and will be returned to you to correct.
- Volunteer dress code is a short or long sleeved plain white, light blue or navy polo. Volunteers supply their own shirts.
* Onboarding requirements for UNC Health Employees are different, contact jodie.skoff@unchealth.unc.edu for more information.
