The UNC Hospitals School of Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) provides a structured pathway for individuals seeking to enter or advance within the field of diagnostic imaging. The program combines clinical training at UNC Health with coursework delivered through the Tesla MR Institute.

Educational model

The program is structured around three core parts:

Certification pathways

ARMRIT pathway (entry-Level)

Designed for individuals without prior imaging experience, this pathway prepares students to meet eligibility requirements for the American Registry of MRI Technologists (ARMRIT).

ARRT Post-primary pathway

Designed for currently credentialed radiologic technologists, this pathway prepares students to meet eligibility requirements for the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) MRI certification.

Clinical experience

Students complete clinical training within UNC Health imaging departments under the supervision of experienced MRI technologists. Clinical training includes:

  • Patient positioning and scanning techniques
  • MRI safety and screening protocols
  • Workflow integration within a clinical environment
  • Progressive competency development

Each student is paired with a clinical mentor responsible for supervision, evaluation and guidance throughout the program.

Employment opportunities during training

When positions are available, students may have the opportunity to apply for employment within UNC Health during their training.

  • ARRT pathway students may be eligible for MRI Technologist in Training positions

Entry-level students may be eligible for MRI Student positions. These opportunities are not guaranteed. Applicants must apply and be selected through the UNC Health hiring process. Employment is not required for program completion.

Admissions

Eligibility requirements

ARMRIT pathway:

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Demonstrated interest in healthcare

ARRT pathway:

  • Current certification and registration in radiography, nuclear medicine technology, radiation therapy or sonography through ARRT, NMTCB or ARDMS.
  • Relevant clinical experience

Application process

  1. Submit application to the UNC MRI program
  2. Participate in interview (if selected)
  3. Receive conditional acceptance
  4. Enroll in Tesla MR coursework
  5. Begin program and clinical scheduling

Tuition and financial information

Estimated tuition for didactic education:

  • ARMRIT pathway: approximately $12,900
  • ARRT pathway: approximately $6,000

Tuition is paid to Tesla MR Institute. UNC Health provides clinical training as part of the program. Sponsorship or internal funding opportunities may be available for eligible candidates.

Outcomes

  • Program completion rate: approximately 75%
  • Certification exam pass rate: approximately 95% within three attempts
  • Training within a high-acuity academic medical center
  • Potential transition into MRI roles within UNC Health
