We truly appreciate your interest in our two-year combined MS/Corporate Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency Program. We're proud to launch this offering drawing on the depth and diversity of experiences throughout UNC Health.
This program is designed for individuals aspiring to lead in health-system pharmacy. At its core, we believe strong leadership is built on a balanced foundation of clinical excellence and administrative leadership. The Corporate Pharmacy Administration and Leadership Residency will equip pharmacists with the strategic, operational, and financial acumen necessary to excel in executive and administrative roles within and across complex health systems and Integrated Delivery Networks (IDN) like UNC Health.
Program Purpose
PGY1 pharmacy residency programs build on Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) education and outcomes to contribute to the development of clinical pharmacists responsible for medication-related care of patients with a wide range of conditions, eligible for board certification, and eligible for postgraduate year two (PGY2) pharmacy residency training.
PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge and incorporating both into the provision of patient care or other advanced practice settings. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency are prepared for advanced patient care, academic, or other specialized positions, along with board certification, if available.
Additional Information
Year One
The first year of the program mirrors our pharmacy practice residency, offering robust training across all core patient care areas—including pediatrics, medicine, surgery, critical care, oncology, and ambulatory care. Integrated throughout these rotations are three corporate administrative experiences with our pharmacy leadership team at the entity or corporate level. This foundational year equips residents with the clinical depth and operational insight needed to successfully complete the BCPS exam—an excellent credential for future pharmacy administrators to showcase their clinical expertise and leadership readiness.
Year Two
The second year builds upon the success of the first and provides you with exposure to our diverse managers and leaders within the department and across the Health System. You will gain experiences in financial, medication safety, operational, and clinical management, along with dedicated time with our experienced preceptors and Executive Leadership Team.
Throughout both residency years, you will also be enrolled in classes to complete your Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences with a specialization in Health-System Pharmacy Administration from the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy, the top-ranked pharmacy school in the nation.
Although these two years of training are intense, there are numerous reasons why UNC Health is an excellent choice for you. Our diverse program offerings and residents hail from across the country, fostering a family-like atmosphere within our organization. You will have the opportunity to learn from other administrative residents at UNC Hospitals, who will become your closest professional colleagues. Additionally, our leaders and teammates are among the best in the nation, each bringing unique perspectives from their diverse training backgrounds to address the challenges of the day.
UNC Medical Center Practice Model
Besides the people in our program, we have a great practice model for training in and delivering patient care. Our layered learning practice model received an ASHP Best Practice Award in Health-System Pharmacy in 2011. Since that time, we have received ASHP Best Practice Awards in 2012, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2016, 2018, 2019, 2020, 2021, 2022, and 2024! We also won the 2017 ASHP Foundation Excellence in Medication Safety Award. We utilize the latest technology, and our facilities have all been updated to meet our professional guidelines. It is a great place to be trained and to learn.
