The pharmacy informatics elective rotation is a 4-week block rotation in which the resident becomes familiar with medication use information systems of the pharmacy and health care system. The Resident will develop an understanding of Computerized Prescriber Order Entry (CPOE) systems, pharmacy order entry systems, barcoded medication administration systems (BCMA), automated dispensing systems, automation/robotics, smart infusion pump, and electronic health records. Additionally, the resident may be exposed to system databases, system interfaces, clinical drug databases, and clinical decision support.
Depending on department initiatives during the rotation, the resident may be involved with the planning and implementation of new systems or upgrades of existing systems. Throughout the rotation, the resident will develop a general understanding of the language and concepts of information technology, pharmacy informatics role in addition to the connection of pharmacy informatics with clinical pharmacy, medication-use processes, and medication safety.
The resident will become an integral part of the pharmacy information system initiatives and may be exposed to the current local, state, federal legislative policies as it pertains to healthcare informatics.
