Rotation Title

Acute Adult General Psychiatry 

Rotation Description:

This one month rotation on the Acute Adult Psychotic Unit is designed to provide the resident with experience and knowledge of pharmacy practice in the acute psychiatric adult patient, including but not limited to patients who have schizophrenia, schizoaffective, bipolar disorder and/or severe, persistent mental illness.  Primary objectives are to learn about psychiatric drug therapy in this population, including clinical manifestations, treatment and monitoring parameters, and how to effectively communicate with the psychiatric patient, their caregivers, and the health care team. Special focus is placed on communicating with providers, patients and their caregivers, with ample counseling and EMR documentation opportunities. Part of the rotation is spent designing, delivering, and documenting Patient Medication Education Groups, or "PMEGS" on the inpatient Eating Disoders, Adolecent and Acute Psychotic Units.
