The patient population served includes adult inpatients admitted to medical, surgical, OB/GYN, or oncology services who have concomitant substance use related needs. The consult team includes attending physicians, addiction medicine fellows, peer support specialists, a clinical pharmacy specialist and licensed clinical social workers. The consult service works closely with inpatient psychiatry consultation services to provide comprehensive substance use disorder and behavioral health services to all patients. The resident may also interact with medical students and psychology interns as part of the team. Primary reasons for Addiction Medicine consults include medical management of withdrawal syndromes, initiation and continuation of medications for substance use disorders, pain management in the context of opioid use disorder, and transitions of care at discharge.
