Pharmacy Benefits and Managed Care

Rotation Description:

The Managed Pharmacy Solutions (MPS) team is a pharmacist-led managed care organization that offers pharmacy benefits management services for a growing number of populations associated with the UNC Health Care System (UNCHCS). Currently, these populations include the UNCHCS Network Health Plan (NHP), and the uninsured patient population through UNC Medical Center’s Pharmacy Assistance Program (PAP).  Additionally, MPS is comprised of a clinical pharmacy team conducting medication therapy management services for a variety of patient populations throughout the health care system.   The learner will be exposed to common aspects of managed care including clinical program development, formulary development and maintenance, utilization management review, plan design and audit, regulatory, compliance and quality oversight, and project planning. Learners will have the opportunity to gain insight and understanding of the management process and metrics utilized to justify pharmacy services. Learners will have an opportunity to assist in identifying and resolving cost savings opportunities within the populations served.
