Rotation Title

Pediatric Pulmonary and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Rotation Description

The Pediatric Pulmonology rotation allows the resident to become an integral member of a pediatric teaching service. Residents will be involved in the care of pediatric patients with various pulmonary disease states including, but not limited to: Cystic Fibrosis, pneumonia, tracheostomy, asthma, vaping related injuries, and lung transplant. There is a strong focus on transitions of care – providing discharge education and coordinating care with our outpatient pharmacies and clinic pharmacists. The learner will demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology and pharmacotherapy of various pediatric disease states. This service often includes patients with multiple chronic disease states that go beyond the care of just the pulmonary system. The resident will provide education to patients, caregivers, nursing staff, and medical team. The resident will be a part of a multidisciplinary team that includes an attending, fellow, upper level resident, intern, nurse coordinator, pharmacist, dietitian, respiratory therapist, medical students, pharmacy students, and bedside nurses.

The Neonatal Critical Care Center (NCCC) is a 58-bed major tertiary care nursery providing care for medically fragile, preterm, ill and surgical newborns. The resident will independently participate in clinical rounds and is expected to design and implement age-appropriate

pharmacotherapy plans, provide accurate and timely responses to pediatric drug information questions, collect and monitor patient specific information to assess the efficacy of drug therapy, review medication orders, respond to code blue emergencies, and demonstrate knowledge of pathophysiology, pharmacotherapy, and complications of disease states commonly seen within neonatal patients.
