We warmly welcome friends and family members to visit patients during their stay at UNC Hospitals.
Mask Policy for UNC Hospitals Patients and Visitors
Effective Monday, January 6, 2025, UNC Hospitals mask policy
Masks are recommended but not required in most areas. Masks are required in areas where isolation or other PPE is needed because of patients' condition. Look for posted signs where a mask is required.
Masks are strongly encouraged for patients and visitors in these areas:
- Emergency Departments
- Adult and Pediatric ICUs
- Adult and Pediatric Stepdown units
- Adult and Pediatric Oncology units
Inpatient Visitors
- Visitors will be permitted in most inpatient areas at UNC Hospitals from the hours of 6:00 AM – 9:00 PM.
- One visitor will be permitted in most inpatient areas at UNC Hospitals from 9:00 PM – 6:00 AM. After hours and overnight visits in the inpatient areas require nursing approval and an identification badge.
- Visitors will be asked to self-screen for illness. You should not visit if you are sick or have signs or symptoms of illness.
- UNC Hospitals may limit visits if behavior has the potential to compromise the care and safety of any patient, or if the visitor displays disruptive behavior or refuses to follow policies.
Emergency Department
- Visitors 11 years old or younger are not allowed in any inpatient areas or waiting rooms.
Pediatric Patients at UNC Hospitals
- Please check with inpatient units for any specific guidelines before visiting.
Visitor Pass Information for UNC Hospitals
You may need a visitor pass during your visit to UNC Hospitals. A pass is required if you are visiting outside normal hours, visiting a minor or visiting the following units:
- N.C. Children’s Hospital
- N.C. Women’s Hospital
- Psychiatric units
Please enter the hospital through the N.C. Basnight Cancer Hospital or N.C. Surgical Hospital doors. You can get a visitor pass at the Information desks for Guest Services in the lobbies of N.C. Women’s, N.C. Children’s and N.C. Cancer hospitals. The only Information desk open 24/7 is at N.C. Women’s Hospital.
Adult visitors, please bring a photo ID to get your visitor pass.
