Student Nurse Externship

Program Overview

The Student Nurse Externship is a 10-week, paid summer position for rising senior ADN & BSN nursing students.

Application period for 2026 will open October 15, 2025. Positions are filled as applications are received. Once they are filled, they are removed from the Careers website.

Summary

The Student Nurse Extern (SNE) Program provides rising senior nursing students with practical work experiences to facilitate their transition into the role of a registered nurse. Throughout the 10-week paid program, learning and nursing engagement occurs on a 24–36-hour weekly basis in a broad range of acute care, critical care, psychiatry, women's, emergency care, perioperative, & outpatient areas. SNEs gain hands-on experience in:

  • Patient Care
  • Teamwork
  • Critical Thinking
  • Communication Skills
  • Professional Development

Application Process

To be eligible, candidates must meet the following requirements by May 20, 2026:

  • Be enrolled as a rising senior for an ADN or BSN nursing program
  • Active NA I listing with NC Department of Health and Human Services
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Provider certification
  • Program Dates: May 26, 2026 - August 1, 2026

Other Information

This externship is not an extension of school clinicals, so skills performed as a student under the supervision of a clinical instructor are not permitted (i.e. IV/PO medication administration, assessment documentation, NGT/foley insertion)
