Substance Treatment and Recovery (STAR)

Formerly known as UNC Hospitals Alcohol and Substance Abuse Program (UNC ASAP)

We understand that your decision to enter treatment is not an easy one. However, we believe it is one of the most important decisions you can make, as you begin to face the disease of addiction, problematic substance use, and/or problems associated with mental health. The STAR staff will support you in this initial step in the process of recovery and wellness, whether you become part of our outpatient program or we aid you in finding the appropriate level of care.

Problems associated with substance use are treatable. No matter how hopeless you may feel right now, treatment can help. It will not be easy and will take hard work and difficult decisions on your part. However, it can be done. Following the principles you will learn, you will soon find yourself living one day at a time, enjoying life again, and re-establishing important relationships.

In the initial recovery phase of treatment, we will work together to create an individualized and integrated treatment plan based in abstinence or harm reduction. You will learn about problematic substance use, substance use disorders, and the disease of addiction, and begin the psychological, physiological, and spiritual healing process through a variety of evidence-based interventions. Throughout your outpatient treatment with STAR, our well-trained therapists will partner with you in creating a life worth living and achieving the wellness you deserve.

We welcome you to UNC STAR and applaud your decision to put the pain of problematic or excessive substance use in the past. Once again, there is hope for your future, one day at a time.

Adolescent Substance Use Services

The UNC Substance Treatment and Recovery Program provides outpatient services to adolescents ages 13-21. Each process begins with an assessment recognizing the holistic needs of the patient and the family by providing a safe and comfortable environment optimized for healing.

STAR’s Adolescent treatment utilizes a variety of different treatment methods to support patients and their families in the recovery process. STAR has found success with applying evidence-based practices such as Motivational Interviewing, Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT).  We offer therapy for individuals and families, and psychiatric/medication management if appropriate.

Group Therapy Programs

Patients are able to select a therapist that best fits their clinical needs when beginning individual therapy. Group therapy involvement and recommendations are then determined by the individual therapist as part of each patient’s individualized treatment plan. Each one of our therapy groups is facilitated by a therapist who is trained in the specific evidence-based treatment models. A treatment plan is negotiated with the patient that will accommodate work, school, and/or family responsibilities. Our goal is to help the patient identify and achieve balance not to overwhelm the patient. Whenever possible, UNC STAR will work with patients to accommodate work, school, and/or family responsibilities in determining treatment plans and group involvement.

The following groups are available:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy Groups
  • Stages of Change/Harm Reduction Group
  • Road to Recovery Process Group
  • Seeking Safety Group
  • Dialectical Behavioral Therapy for Recovery Skills Group
