Bereavement Services at UNC Hospice
Losing someone you love can leave you feeling alone, overwhelmed, or unsure where to turn. At UNC Hospice, we offer compassionate support for anyone who is grieving, whether or not your loved one received hospice care with us. Our services are free and designed to help you navigate the emotional experience of loss with care and respect.
Grief Support Groups
We offer small, in-person grief support groups that meet weekly for an eight-week series. These groups provide a safe, supportive space to connect with others who are mourning, guided with care and compassion from trained facilitators. Groups typically meet in the spring, summer, and fall at our Hospice Home in Pittsboro. Contact our Bereavement Coordinator, Steven Chewning, if you are interested in joining one of our grief support groups.
Next group will begin in February 2026.
Walking With Grief
Join others for a gentle, reflective walk for those coping with a death-related loss. There's no need to register - just come as you are. Walking together offers a way to be in community, share stories, or simply be present with others who understand.
When & Where
- 1st & 3rd Tuesdays, 10:00 a.m.
- Southern Community Park, Chapel Hill
Individual Grief Counseling
We offer free, short-term grief counseling to help you through the early experience of loss and to build coping strategies that feel right for you. Our team can also connect you with trusted community resources if you want ongoing support.
Spiritual Care Services
Our clinical chaplains offer compassionate spiritual and emotional support to individuals and families of all traditions - or none. Chaplains are available to listen without judgment and to walk alongside you in ways that honor your values and beliefs.
Chaplains can help with:
- Listening and presence during difficult moments
- Spiritual or existential questions after loss
- Support with memorial or ritual planning
Grief Workshops
We offer grief workshops at our UNC Hospice Home. These workshops may include art therapy, writing, coping through the holidays, a book club, mindfulness, and more. Contact us for the current schedule.
Mailings
For our bereaved families, we offer a 13-month grief support program that includes quarterly mailings of resources and information.
Annual Memorial Service
Each year we hold a community memorial service to honor and remember those we've lost. Families and friends are welcome.
We're Here to Listen.
