Hearing Tests

The first step to treating hearing impairments at UNC Medical Center’s Audiology Department is an inclusive hearing evaluation with one of our audiologists. In order to personalize treatment options to your needs, hearing evaluations are conducted to determine the nature and the degree of hearing loss. Hearing evaluations usually includes an otoscopy and physical examination of the ears, pure tone air conduction and bone conduction test, speech reception thresholds and word recognition testing.

The hearing evaluation may also include:

  • Tympanometry
  • Acoustic reflex testing
  • Objective measurements of hearing (otoacoustic emissions and/or auditory brainstem response testing).

If testing reveals the need for further medical evaluation, our audiologists are able to refer the patient to one of the highly-experienced Ear, Nose, Throat physicians from the UNC Department of Otolaryngology/Head and Neck Surgery.
