Women's Hospital
The Women’s Hospital is an academic tier III referral center for Obstetrics, Gynecology and Gynecology oncology serving patients from all over the state.
We offer a full range of services designed to meet women’s needs throughout their lifespan. Services include doula programs, which are free of charge to our patients, midwifery services, specially trained social workers in family violence, and cutting-edge research in perinatal/postpartum depression management.
We are a designated Baby Friendly USA hospital and recognized by US News and World Reports as one of Americas Best Hospitals for Maternity Care because patient safety and quality outcomes is a priority for our collaborative teams.

Psychiatry Inpatient Services

UNC Jaycee Burn Center’s Burn Intensive Care Unit
The UNC Jaycee Burn Center’s Burn Intensive Care Unit is a 21-bed, mixed-acuity unit that provides comprehensive care for both pediatric and adult patients.
Our multidisciplinary team includes fully trained burn surgeon intensivists, specialized nursing staff, advanced practice providers, respiratory therapists, occupational and physical therapists, case managers, child life specialists, and recreational therapists. Together we are dedicated to delivering high-quality, specialized burn care tailored to the unique needs of each patient, fostering recovery and holistic support for both patients and their families.
Surgery Services
Our Surgery Services is the largest service consisting of 12 unique and dynamic units, our Certified Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Nurse (CWOCN) team, and the Certified Diabetes Care and Education (CDCE) specialists. All of whom are committed to obtaining the highest level of quality patient care, nursing excellence, customer services, and teamwork. Our units will offer you a wide range of opportunities that are exciting and challenging regardless of what career stage you are in. Our service bridges the continuum of care between intensive, intermediate, and acute levels of care.
The Inpatient acute-care areas include:
- Cardiovascular
- Abdominal Organ Transplant, Urology, and High-Risk Plastic Surgeries
- Orthopedics and Trauma
- Gastrointestinal Surgery/Surgical Oncology
- Neurologic and Neurosurgical
- Surgical Oncology and ENT
- Adult Surgical Observation and Extended Recovery
Our inpatient critical-care areas include:
- Surgical Trauma Critical Care Unit (patients with a wide variety of surgical procedures, trauma, abdominal transplantation, and neurology)
- Cardiovascular and Thoracic Critical Care Unit (patients with major cardiac, thoracic, or vascular surgeries and heart/lung transplantation)
- Neuroscience Care Unit (patients with neurological injuries requiring surgery and neurology)
The CWOCN team support critical care throughout the organization including patients with complex wound care and ostomies.
The CDCE specialists provide direct inpatient diabetes self-management education for both adult and pediatric patients, while also supporting education for nursing staff.
Children’s Services
Our Children’s Services boats nationally recognized and high-quality care for the kids of North Carolina. We have critical care, intermediate care, and acute care units that partner with one another to provide care for kids and their families throughout their stay.
You may have heard that we have many leading pediatric specialties and that is true, but what’s hard to put into words is how much fun it is to work here We believe play is therapy and not just for the kids!
Inpatient Medicine Services
Our Inpatient Medicine Services consists of acute, intermediate, and intensive care units specializing in the care of patients with general and specialty medicine diagnoses. Specialty care includes oncology, cardiology, nephrology, infectious diseases, and more!
Our team also includes the Adult Specialty Care Team, Venous Access Team, Cardiac Surveillance, and Dialysis, who provide services and support to all the units and patients throughout the hospital. Critical response nurses from medicine services cover primary code blue and rapid response teams.
Our medicine team members have been recognized locally, statewide, and nationally with award winners in many programs such DAISY, PETAL, North Carolina Great 100 Nurses, Triangle Business Journal Healthcare Leader, and the American Association of Critical Care Nurses Circle of Excellence.
Emergency Departments
Our Emergency Departments provide exceptional care to a broad range of patients, not only from the local community but across the state. Our goal is to ensure that all patients are treated quickly and efficiently.
At our Chapel Hill location, the Emergency Department is a Level 1 Adult and Pediatric Trauma Center, capable of handling all types of injuries. It includes a dedicated Pediatric space with Pediatric Emergency Medicine physicians and specialized areas and teams for psychiatric evaluations.
At our Hillsborough location, the Emergency Department serves as a busy community hub and is proud to be North Carolina’s first Geriatric Accredited Emergency Department with staff specially trained to address the unique needs of older adults.
Additionally, we are grateful to have Sexual Assault Nurse Examiners available 24/7 at both campuses. These skilled nurses provide medical forensic evaluations and care for victims of sexual violence, ensuring a compassionate and safe environment for their treatment.
