SERVICES:
Surgical Pathology receives and processes a variety of human tissue specimens from the various operating rooms within UNC Hospitals and Clinics. Histology processes portions of these tissues for presentation to pathologists, who will review them under a microscope and render a diagnosis.
PICK-UP/DELIVERY OF SPECIMENS:
A Histology Laboratory courier picks up specimens for routine processing from UNC Hospitals operating rooms and clinics as well as from the Core Laboratory by the Histology Lab at scheduled pickup times.
Specimens that need immediate or RUSH processing should be delivered by OR/ward/unit personnel.
RUSH specimens received for processing by 12:30 pm are processed the same day.
Specimens delivered outside of normal laboratory hours should be placed UNFIXED in the refrigerator adjacent to the accessioning/receiving window, accompanied by a completed Surgical Pathology Request Form.
SUPPLIES:
Request Forms (requisitions) must accompany each specimen and be filled out completely for each case, listing all specimens. The requisition must contain patient name, medical record number, requesting physician, physician code, pertinent clinical history, any special studies (such as special stains) requested and source of specimen.
SPECIMEN REJECTION:
The Laboratory reserves the right to reject specimens that are submitted in an improper manner. Criteria for rejection include:
- Unlabeled specimens
- Specimen container and requisition mismatches
- Unacceptable packaging of the specimen
- Broken or leaking specimen containers
- Inadequate material for processing
