SERVICES:
Surgical Pathology receives and processes a variety of human tissue specimens from the various operating rooms within UNC Hospitals and Clinics. Histology processes portions of these tissues for presentation to pathologists, who will review them under a microscope and render a diagnosis.
PICK-UP/DELIVERY OF SPECIMENS:
A Histology Laboratory courier picks up specimens for routine processing from UNC Hospitals operating rooms and clinics as well as from the Core Laboratory by the Histology Lab at scheduled pickup times.
Specimens that need immediate or RUSH processing should be delivered by OR/ward/unit personnel.
RUSH specimens received for processing by 12:30 pm are processed the same day.
Specimens delivered outside of normal laboratory hours should be placed UNFIXED in the refrigerator adjacent to the accessioning/receiving window, accompanied by a completed Surgical Pathology Request Form.
SUPPLIES:
Request Forms (requisitions) must accompany each specimen and be filled out completely for each case, listing all specimens. The requisition must contain patient name, medical record number, requesting physician, physician code, pertinent clinical history, any special studies (such as special stains) requested and source of specimen.
SPECIMEN REJECTION:
The Laboratory reserves the right to reject specimens that are submitted in an improper manner. Criteria for rejection include:
- Unlabeled specimens
- Specimen container and requisition mismatches
- Unacceptable packaging of the specimen
- Broken or leaking specimen containers
- Inadequate material for processing

General Information:
The Point of Care Testing department within the UNC Medical Center is accredited by the College of American Pathologists (CAP).
The program has more than 8,500 certified point of care testing operators and monitors more than 500 devices. The department oversees point of care testing within the UNC Medical Center, Ambulatory Care Center, Hillsborough Hospital, Children’s Raleigh, Youth Behavioral Health, Eastowne Medical Office building, hospital-based clinics, and faculty practices.
A POC New Test Request Form (see attachment) must be submitted for any point of care testing (device or kit) that would be new to a testing location as well as point of care testing to be used in research studies for patient/subject management purposes (e.g. subject enrollment, assessment of health).
For any site currently performing or desiring to add point of care testing, the MCL POC office should be consulted to discuss the testing site's clinical needs. MCL POC personnel can provide advisement based on UNC Health’s standardized POC devices and kits currently in-use and their associated test complexity to determine the required CLIA certificate type.
The requester must review the following key considerations for point of care testing to facilitate completion of the POC New Test Request Form (see attachment) and submit the completed form to the MCL POC office via email at poc@unchealth.unc.edu.
If a site is in need of an additional device within their current test menu, the MCL POC office must be notified prior to purchase via poc@unchealth.unc.edu.
The site may be required to complete and submit a POC Additional Device Request Form (see attachment) depending upon the device requested. done
