Specimen Routine:
Fresh Stool (<2 hrs old);  at least 50 gm if solid, 20 mL if liquid; or formalin-preserved stool

Availability Routine: Specimens accepted 24 hours/7 days. Tests performed weekly on Thursdays.  Specimen must be received in the laboratory by 8:00am on Thursday to be included on the run for that day.

Reference Range    

May be found in both immunocompromised and immunocompetent hosts.
Test not performed after >3 days hospitalization. 
One Specimen is usually adequate in most cases:  up to 3 specimens, 24 hours apart accepted.  Only one stool will be accepted for each patient per day.  NO SWABS accepted. 
Stool specimens must not be collected after the administration of barium, bismuth or oil.
