Vigorously swab the base of the lesion using one sterile, dry synthetic swab (Red Capped Double Swabs, Lawson #053686).  Using a second swab, repeat the swabbing procedure from the same lesion.  Insert BOTH swabs into the sterile plastic transport tube and tightly close the sample. Refrigerate within 1 hour of collection.

DO NOT add any transport media to the sample and DO NOT use E-swabs.  Two swabs should be submitted per lesion to ensure adequate material is sampled.  If multiple lesions with differing appearances are present or on different body sites, consider submitting additional swabs, as described above, for each lesion under separate test orders.

Testing at laboratories other than SLPH does not require prior public health approval.  However, suspected cases must still be reported to your local public health department or NCDPH (919-733-3419) within 24 hours per the NC State Administrative Code.
