Add-on requests can be ordered in EPIC as a "specimen in lab Add-on."  Test performed using the Roche Cobas HPV assay, an FDA-approved nucleic acid amplification test for the qualitative detection of the L1 region of the HPV genome.  The high-risk HPV types detected by the assay include:  16, 18, 31, 33, 35, 39, 45, 51, 52, 56, 58, 59, 66 and 68.  The assay is able to genotype HPV 16 and HPV 18 but does not discriminate between the other 12 high risk genotypes.  This assay cannot evaluate persistence of any one type.

Primary HPV DNA testing-is available for women 25 years of age and older.  EPIC order: "HPV DNA HI RISK", select source of Pap Thinprep.  When prompted "Is this a Primary HPV Test?" answer Yes.  Positive tests will be reflexed to Cytopathology for Pap testing.  Specimens should be hand-delivered to the Microbiology laboratory and not sent through the tube station.

Co-testing (HPV DNA and Pap) is available for women 30 years of age and older.  EPIC Order:  Within the Pap order, select "HPV Testing".  Specimens should be hand-delivered to Cytopathology and not sent through the tube station.

ASCUS Reflex (Pap with reflex to HPV for ASCUS) is available for women 21 years of age and older.  EPIC Order:  Within the Pap order, select "HPV Reflex for ASCUS."  Specimens should be hand-delivered to Cytopathology and not sent through the tube station.

Self-collected vaginal swabs are acceptable for Primary HPV DNA testing only.

  • The only acceptable swab for self-collected vaginal swabs for HPV DNA is the Copan FLOQSwab (Infor # 447765).
  • Swabs must be suspended in PreservCyt Solution (ThinPrep) prior to transporting to the laboratory.

  • Note:  Self-collected vaginal swabs are NOT acceptable for cytology, including co-testing (HPV DNA and Pap) and ASC-US reflex (Pap with reflex to HPV for ASC-US). Positive HPV DNA tests from self-collected vaginal swabs will not be reflexed to cytology
