UNC Health Care Spine Center

Spine Care

The UNC Hospitals Spine Center offers a comprehensive, multidisciplinary approach to the diagnosis and treatment of spine disease, with a commitment to evidence-based practice, outcomes enhancement, and financial stewardship. Because most patients with spine based pain do not require surgery for recovery, non-surgical treatment is emphasized. When required, the UNC Hospitals Spine Center provides timely and convenient access to spine surgery as well.

Our Goal

Our goal is to provide you the best treatment based on sound medical research. Our spine care providers’ specialized spine training and years of expertise provide the basis for our team. We work together in a comprehensive, multidisciplinary manner to provide you a coordinated, streamlined process for the diagnosis and treatment of your spine disease. We are committed to providing you with excellent care with a non-surgical focus but with access to spine surgery should that be warranted. We also understand the financial hardships many of us experience today and are dedicated to providing you with cost efficient care, since the best spine care is rarely the most expensive spine care.

Common Spinal Disorders

Back and neck pain, whether acute or chronic, are common conditions affecting people of all ages. They are some of the most common reasons for anyone to see any doctor. Though most people will get better regardless of the initial treatments, 60-70% will relapse within a year and 30% will continue to have pain 6 months after the onset of pain. Because of this less than acceptable result, many treatment options are available. The UNC Hospitals Spine Center is committed to addressing this problem and providing you with the best state-of-the-art care available.

Better Back Care Program

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine has been selected by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid’s Innovation Center for a $6 million prospective award for its Better Back Care program.

UNC’s Better Back Care program creates a new model of care for patients with back pain that will improve the patient’s experience and outcomes, reduce the cost of care and deliver an innovative method of financing care.

The Better Back Care program will create a medical neighborhood linking approximately 60 primary care providers with the UNC spine program, an existing multidisciplinary team of 10 specialty providers employing evidence-based, patient-centered approaches. This medical neighborhood will adopt evidence-based, coordinated care of demonstrated effectiveness for patients with new onset low back pain through guideline adherence, patient education and shared decision making, improved access to care, and care coordination. Nurse patient navigators will play a critical role by providing clinical support and care coordination for patients in the neighborhood to ensure patients receive the right care at the right time.
