Cardiac Genetics

Certain cardiovascular diseases such as hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and Marfan’s syndrome are known to have a genetic component that makes them likely to be passed from one generation to the next. In such cases, or in any situation where a familial tendency to heart disease exists, it may be of benefit to patients and their family members to receive genetic testing and counseling.

UNC is unique in being the only hospital in the region to offer specialized genetic testing and counseling for cardiovascular patients and their family members. The clinic also utilizes clinical diagnostic tools such as advanced cardiac imaging and operates collaboratively with other cardiovascular specialists at UNC for diagnosis and treatment of patients with genetic cardiovascular diseases and their family members.
