About Cardiac Rehabilitation

Patients who have undergone heart surgery or an event such as a heart attack benefit greatly from participating in physician-supervised cardiac rehabilitation programs. Such programs can help patients gain strength, enjoy a more active quality of life, and better learn to manage risk factors for heart disease.

Cardiac Rehabilitation at UNC is a comprehensive, multi-disciplinary program, conveniently offered at the UNC Wellness Center at Meadowmont in Chapel Hill. The program includes medically supervised exercise as part of an individualized care plan approved by the program's medical director. Patients also receive dietary counseling, psychological and vocational support, and ongoing heath-education classes.

Exercise sessions at Meadowmont consist of a group warm-up with others who have similar risk factors and medical conditions, individualized aerobic exercise, strength and flexibility training, and a cool-down period. Certified clinical exercise specialists are always in attendance, as are nurses trained in advanced cardiac life support. A UNC cardiologist is also present during all rehab sessions.

The cardiac rehabilitation program at UNC is certified by the American Association of Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation (AACVPR), and by the North Carolina Division of Health Service Regulation.

All participants must be referred by a physician. Those who wish to attend may ask their physicians for a referral, or call the Wellness Center at (919) 843-2158 to request information or a referral form.
