Dermatologic Surgery

At UNC Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, our dermatologists have extensive experience in skin surgery and aim to provide the best surgical treatment and cosmetic outcome. Weekly outpatient surgery clinics for removing both benign and malignant skin tumors are held at our Southern Village, Hillsborough and Rex locations.

Most procedures are relatively quick and require only local anesthesia. Some common conditions we treat in our outpatient surgical clinics include:

  • Basal cell skin cancer
  • Cysts
  • Dysplastic Nevi
  • Melanoma
  • Other malignant skin lesions
  • Squamous skin cancer

Services and Treatments

Our dermatologists are dedicated to helping you find the right type of treatment for your specific condition.

Mohs Surgery

Mohs Surgery is a highly specialized surgical procedure to remove skin cancers. Our physicians know early detection of skin cancer offers patients better treatments and greater chances of being cured. This procedure was developed more than 50 years ago by Dr. Frederic Mohs, professor of surgery at the University of Wisconsin.

Diseases and diagnoses treated using Mohs surgery at UNC Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center include:

  • Basal cell carcinomas
  • Other skin cancers
  • Squamous cell carcinomas

Mohs surgery involves three separate steps:

  1. The surgical removal or excision of tissue
  2. Processing the specimen for microscopic review
  3. The microscopic examination of the prepared slide
