Disability Income Plans

UNC Health Care offers its employees Disability Insurance through several different plans:

Disability Income Plan of North Carolina

UNC Health Care employees automatically receive a disability benefit through the Disability Income Plan of North Carolina. The disability benefit is available to all permanent employees who work 30 hours or more per week, who contribute to the retirement system, and who have at least 1 year of service.

Short-Term Disability Guidelines for Managers (Restricted to employees)

Short-term Disability

UNC Health Care employees are eligible for short-term disability benefits under the Disability Income Plan of North Carolina if they meet the criteria listed above and after satisfying a 60-day waiting period.

The short-term disability benefit pays 50% of the employee's salary prior to their first day out of work due to disability. Short-term disability benefits are payable for up to 12 months.

Long-term Disability

UNC Health Care employees are eligible for long-term disability benefits under the Disability Income Plan of North Carolina if they meet the criteria listed above and have at least 5 years of service. The long-term disability benefit will pay 65% of your gross monthly salary up to $3,900 monthly.

Liberty Mutual Supplemental Long-term Disability

Liberty Mutual Supplemental Long-term Disability is supplemental long-term disability plan through Liberty Mutual for TSERS participants only. This plan will allow an employee to receive up to 66 2/3% of their monthly salary while on disability, short or long-term. There is a 90 day waiting period. All permanent employees who work 30 or more hours per week are eligible.

Liberty's long term disability insurance is designed to fill in the gaps of the State's plan for the first year of employment (since there is no coverage available under the State's Plan); as a supplement during the State's short term period before and after five years of service; and, in the event your salary exceeds the covered maximum salary limit under the State's short term and long term benefit periods.

Standard Long Term Disability Plan

The Standard Supplemental Long-term Disability is supplemental long-term disability plan for ORP participants only. This plan will allow an employee to receive up to 66 2/3% of their monthly salary while on disability, short or long-term, and continue retirement contributions to a TIAA account at the full contribution rate for the duration of disability. There is a 90 day waiting period.

The Standard's long term disability insurance is designed to fill in the gaps of the State's plan for the first year of employment (since there is no coverage available under the State's plan); as a supplement during the State's short term period before and after five years of service; and, in the event your salary exceeds the covered maximum salary limit under the State's short term and long term benefit periods. All the while, continuation of retirement contributions is a key benefit of the program as well.
